BRITISH & MIDLAND HILL CLIMB CHAMPIONSHIPS RETURN TO PRESCOTT HILL

Updated: Oct 3

Some of the best drivers and fastest cars in British motorsport will be in action at Prescott Hillclimb this weekend (17th/18th August) when the Bugatti Owners’ Club plays host to the British Hillclimb Championship.

The leading single seaters running in the Championship are capable of accelerating from zero to 110mph faster than a Formula One car and, given the right weather conditions, the outright hill record of 34.65 seconds to tackle the 1128-yard course could be under threat.

That record is currently held by Wallace Menzies and the Gould driver will be among those looking to better that time over the course of the weekend. He will face strong competition, however including from current Championship leader Alex Summers at the wheel of his DJ Firestorm.

Other front running Gould drivers scheduled to be in action are Matthew Ryder and Will Hall while Trevor Willis must be in contention for a win in his OMS.

The Championship is not all about the single seaters, however with many of the classes attracting strong entries and there will be plenty of fierce fights throughout the field, including in the production saloon categories which boasts entries from some of the most prestigious marques, including Porsche, Lotus, Alfa Romeo and BMW.

Entries in the Specialist Production Car category are dominated by Caterham and Westfield Sevens but something a little different to watch out for is the Subaru powered AMS Murtaya of John Pick.

Looking to extend his lead in the Championship’s Tin Top Challenge will be local driver Roger Moran in his powerful Skoda Fabia R5 but he can expect a close battle with his nearest rival in the Challenge, Mitsubishi Evo VI driver Stephen Moore.

The class within which Stephen Moore runs perfectly illustrates the huge variety of machinery in action over the weekend as he faces competition not only from the TVR Griffith of Steven Mogg but also Haydn Spedding’s Jaguar E-Type, Nigel Elliott driving a Triumph TR7-V8 and Paul Howells at the wheel of his Porsche 911RSR.

One of the largest class entries is that for racing cars between 600cc and 1100cc. Close competition is assured between the nimble motorcycle engined single seaters with no fewer than 20 cars entered in this class alone.

A similar number of cars are entered in the class for single seaters over 2 litres, the class from which the Fastest Time of the Day is likely to emerge.

Alongside the British Hillclimb Championship, the weekend will feature the Bugatti Owners Club’s own New Barn Interclub RS Speed Championship. Leading expert contender in the championship is currently Colin Richards in his MG Midget while Richard Morris heads the novice category driving a GBS Zero.

Another car to look our for will be the Bugatti Type 51 of Ed Burgess. Last season saw Ed break the hill record for a Bugatti which had stood for 19 years. He will no doubt hope to improve on that time in a shorter time period.

Practice will take place on Saturday with a final practice run on Sunday morning. Timed runs and Top 12 run offs for the fastest cars on the day will all take place on Sunday.

Action will start with practice from 8:30am each day and is scheduled to run until 5:00pm. Admission is £18:00 in advance or £20 on the day. Accompanied Under 16’s will be admitted free of charge as will members of the Bugatti Owners’ Club.
